Chucalissa (pronounced choo-kah-le-sa) is a place with much history, and today is the site of the
Chucalissa Archaeological Museum, which every year holds a Southeastern Indian Heritage Festival. The goal is to educate and promote greater awareness and cherish the achievements of the Native American peole of the mid-south, both past and present. American Indian communities gather each year, in early August, to do just that. They demonstrate and celebrate their heritage by music, food, dance, games, and spiritual activities. Before Europeans set foot upon Mississippi Valley Soil, American Indians had developed a vibrant and sophisticated culture in the Memphis area, that the people of the Memphis area treasure, and don't want to forget.
Learn more about the Native American people, and their culture, all while having a blast at the festival. You and the kids can enjoy the tasting of new and different foods, playing ancient games, and so much more! When it gets to warm in the sun, you can move inside to the museum itself and enjoy their interesting exhibits, or go to the museum store and buy a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
