World War II B-17 Bomber "Flying Fortress" Makes Its Home In Memphis, TN
Mud Island River Park Logo
You'll be an expert before the day is over when you visit Mud Island River Park.
On your next trip to Memphis, be sure to stop by and catch a glimpse of the restoration of the Memphis Belle, the legendary World War II B-17 bomber. The aircraft is famous for more than just the movie that would bear its name. The plane is currently housed at the Jim Webb Restoration Center at Millington Airport. It was recently relocated there from the pavilion on Mud Island River Park in downtown Memphis so that it can undergo restoration work. The public can view the Memphis Belle during its restoration, which is anticipated to take about three years. The Jim Webb Restoration Center has hours open to the public, but check ahead of time for the current schedule. The Jim Webb Restoration Center is located at 8101 Hornet Avenue, near the Millington Municipal Airport in the northwest metro Memphis area. The Memphis Belle is a historic symbol that honors its own crew and all the other people who fought in World War II. The plane completed 25 unescorted missions over Europe during the war and took its last flight on July 17, 1946. History enthusiasts young and old won't want to miss a visit to see the Memphis Belle. |
