The Orpheum Theater in Memphis

Since its opening in 1928, the Orpheum Theater has hosted world-class productions. This popular theater sits on the heart of downtown Memphis on South Main Street, making it easy to catch a show while you're in town. With its crystal chandeliers, brocade and tasseled draperies, gilded moldings, and even a Wurlitzer organ, the décor of the Orpheum Theater provides you with a grand setting to enjoy its many shows.

In 1890, the originally Orpheum Theater opened under another name, and was popular for vaudeville performances. However, that building burned down, and the current structure was built in 1928. In 1940, a movie theater chain purchased the theater with the desire to run Hollywood hit films at the theater. However, in 1976, the Orpheum Theater was restored to its original glory and today runs first class, live productions as well as movies. With its long, rich history, it's not a surprise that many people claim the theater is haunted by the ghost of a young girl, who is often reported to be giggling and playing the organ.

Upcoming shows include Wicked, Casablanca, Dora Live!, The Way We Were, and many more. Tickets can be purchased on-site, but advance ticket purchase is recommended.

You can also explore the ghostly side of the Orpheum Theater, as well as the spiritual aspects throughout the city with the Memphis Ghost Tour. This one and a half hour walking tour covers the distance of one mile, and takes you to the Orpheum Theater, as well as WC Handy Park, Cotton Row, and other hot supernatural spots.

Lodging near the Orpheum Theater includes the Doubletree Hotel Memphis Downtown, the Holiday Inn Select Downtown, the Residence Inn by Marriott, Madison Hotel, and others.

If you're looking for a great way to experience a little bit of history while you take in a great show on your trip to Memphis, visit the famous and historic Orpheum Theater!
