Over one million people refer to Memphis as home, and it's the 40th largest metropolitarn area in the United States. It's located on the banks of the Mississippi River, east of Arkansas, north of Mississippi, south of Kentucky, and west of North Carolina. Memphis is located in the southwest corner of Tennessee, less than 30 miles from the Arkansas border. There are five counties that make up Memphis and the surrounding metropolitan area; Shelby, Tipton, Crittenden, Desoto, and Fayette.
