Memphis Museums
Coming to Memphis
Rock 'n' Roll when you step into the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum!
Feeling a little confused about what to do on your next Memphis vacation? Why not check out a museum. Visiting a museum provides a fun yet educational experience. Here are a few museums in the Memphis area. The Memphis Rock 'N' Soul Museum tells the story of the people who overcame social and economic barriers to create a sound that changed the world. The museum also chronicles the history and evolution in the Memphis area from its early beginnings to today. At The National Civil Rights Museum, the history of civil rights in America unfolds. Once part of the Lorraine Hotel where civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, today it stands as a monument and documents the struggle for equality featuring civil rights exhibits from 1916 to present day. Step into the world of soul music at Stax Museum of American Soul Music. With more than 2,000 artifacts the museum tells the history of this unique sound. Stax Records was one of the most influential and popular record labels of the day and helped launch the careers of many artists who helped shape the sound of soul music including Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes. The Children's Museum of Memphis allows kids to enjoy learning. At this exciting museum children can "drive" a car, "fly" a plane, and even "climb" a skyscraper. There are a wide range of fun interactive activities and exhibits that kids will love. Parents will enjoy the educational aspect of the museum. Fun and education combine to form a great time for all ages. Located in downtown Memphis, Sun Studio is the only music studio to be designated a National Historic Landmark. Here rock n' roll was born and many artists have recorded at Sun Studio including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, BB King, and Roy Orbison. With its rich history there are a wide variety of memorabilia and rare recordings are on display. At the Pink Palace Museum you can learn about the unique history of the area as well as view dinosaur fossils up close and personal, and even trace the development of the area from the time of the Spanish explorers to the many yellow fever epidemics. The museum also features a planetarium where you can explore the stars and an amazing IMAX theatre with a 4-story moving screen. Each of these museums provide a different learning experience. Whether its music, civil rights, or fun for kids, there is something for everyone. These are just a few museums in the area you might want to check out during your next Memphis getaway |
