As Australia's last remaining "grand" hotel, the Windsor Hotel in Melbourne offers a 5-star glimpse into the last century for visitors and guests alike. The building was actually purchased by the government in 1976, when it seemed likely that it would be torn down and replaced with modern office towers. After the Hotel was designated as an "heritage site" on the Victorian Heritage Register, it was sold again to a private firm, the Oberoi group, which renovated it into a 5 star hotel. In spite of the Victorian-era appearance, the Hotel's 160 rooms and 20 suites are fitted with all the modern conveniences, including A/C, Cable TV, in-room mini bar, internet, and pay-per-view movies. Facilities also include the Grand Ballroom and 1 Bourke Street with room for up to 400 people, as well as several smaller rooms for less auspicious occasions. There is plenty of parking on site. The Hotel's elegant restaurant, 111 Spring Street, is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. A less formal venue is the Hotel's famed Cricketer's Bar, which serves drinks and light meals. Don't miss the mid-afternoon "tea," which features a rich selection of delectable scones and sandwiches all arranged on a decadent three-tier cake stand. Served seven days a week. The Windsor is across from the Old Treasury Building and Parliament House and right in the middle of Melbourne. Nearby attractions include the boutiques on Collins Street, the recently rejuvenated Southbank district, fellow Victorian Heritage Register member Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the National Gallery of Victoria on St. Kilda Road.
