The University of Melbourne came into existence in 1853-1854. It was a product of the rising wealthy class of the gold rush. A purely secular institution, it originally catered to the children of the elite classes. It retained its small but prestigious position until after World War II. Following WWII, Melbourne University began to embark on rebranding itself, restructuring to accept all types of students. It still, however, maintained its high standards of instruction and research. With several amalgamations in the 1980s and 1990s, Melbourne University began to establish itself as a prominent educator and researcher among its peers. It is now a premier education facility in Australia. It is the choice of many students annually for a higher education. Students attending Melbourne University have the choice of obtaining degrees in 9 faculties. These are the faculties of Architecture, Building and Planning, Arts, Economics and Commerce, Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Music, Science and Veterinarian Science. These offer courses at botht eh undergraduate and graduate level. There are also grad and undergrad studies at related facilities or schools. There is the School of Education, the Melbourne School of Engineering, the Melbourne School of land and Environment, Melbourne Law School, the Faculty of Victoria College of Arts and the Melbourne School of Graduate Research. You may attend the main campus of suburban Parkville or those of Shepparton, Creswick, Dookie or Burnley. During your studies, you may wish to stay in any of the residential halls or colleges. There are 12 such residences. They include Graduate House, International House, Queen's College, Janet Clarke Hall and St. Mary's College.
