Founded in 2002 by Vincent Miller, Red Stitch Actors Theatre is an independent theater company. It is unique in its approach to live productions. Everything is part of a co-operative or ensemble process. From the initial decision on which play to perform to the advertisements to ticket sales and technological aspects of production, every member has a say and takes part. This includes the 12 actors and 3 technicians. Not only do they all work on the various attributes of the entire product, they are also owners of the theater. Red Stitch Actors Theatre is aptly named in this regard.
Red Stitch Actors Theatre is very careful in what it chooses to perform. Its mission is to select and produce a repertoire contemporary and different from the usual mainstream fare. This not-for-profit ensemble is committed to providing the audiences with professional and modern plays. These include works not usually produced. Red Stitch Actors Theatre has presented over 50 works rarely seen by Australian audiences. Some of them have been Australian premiers. The plays put on the boards by this theater include works that have been written by Edward Albee, Richard Bean, Martin Crimp, David Greig, Sarah Kane, Neil LaBute and Paula Vogel. They have more recently produced a work arising out of their "Writers in Residence Program." This was Red Sky Morning by Tom Holloway. A graduate program allows 2 recent Arts Graduates to become full time members of Red Stitch Actors Theatre for 2 years.
