Palais Theatre in Melbourne, AU is a venue located in St. Kilda, Australia. Although it was once used as a picture theater, today it is for live performances. The theater is considered a prime example of some of the most beautiful Art deco architecture, with most of the features in the theater being the original features. They are also listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The City of Port Phillip, owner of the site, funded parts of a restoration so it could be made part of a Triangle Site redevelopment project. This current Palais Theater is not the first theater in St. Kilda to be called "Palais", with the first opening in 1914. What started as the Palais de Danse became the Palais Pictures, followed by a remodeled Palais Pictures and finally to what was one of the biggest theaters in the southern hemisphere.
Moorish architecture brought the inspiration for the exterior and interiors of the building along with twin dome towers. This tower theme is used by many of the surrounding buildings as well. You'll also see a touch of Egyptian and Baroque elements inside and outside the theatre. Tours of the Palais Theater are free and conducted tours are held on February 8, which is St. Kilda Festival Day. You'll be given views of the auditorium, front and backstage areas. Palais Theater consists of stalls, lounge and dress circle. The stalls are all the downstairs seats with the front row being A and the back row NN. The lounge is the front of the venue on the second level. Any seats in the lounge are considered as good seats. Directly in back of the lounge is the dress circle, a spot that gives you an excellent view of the acoustics and the stage.
