Metlink Transport System is the privatized system of public transportation in Melbourne, and includes the railway, tram, buses, and the regional train system. Hired to unify the confusing system of local franchise operators and State Government then running public transport in Melbourne, the company promptly took action. A new system of signage was put into place in which metropolitan train stops and information are coded in blue, tram stops and information in green, bus stops and information in orange, and Victoria Line regional train stops and information are coded in purple. The metropolitan train network is operated by Connex Melbourne and services routes to and from the city center. The tram network is operated by Yarra trams, with service in and out of the city to the suburbs. Victoria Line (better known as V/Line) is the operator for coaches running in Victoria, mostly from Melbourne to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour, and Gippsland. Metropolitan buses operate throughout all suburbs in the Melbourne area, often in areas with little or no tram or train service. Timetable information about Nightrider, the safe way to travel the Melbourne area after midnight on weekends, Regional buses, and Telebuses is also available through Metlink. Airport bus service and "SmartBus" information is also available. Pre-purchased tickets known as "Metcard" are the easiest and most convenient way to ride the Metlink System. Metcards are good for travel on any of the transportation modes serviced by Metlink. Metlink produces all customer information guides, and they are also the ones responsible for finding your lost bag on the train.
