Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Melbourne, AUThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performs more than 150 concerts every year to 250,000 people in the city of Melbourne and the
larger Victoria region. As of 2008, the MSO has also combined with the former Melbourne Chorale to form the MSO Chorus.
With a reputation for performing classical works with flawless simplicity, the MSO performed their first concert in 1906 under the direction of Alberto Zelman. Recent classical performances of note have been Verdi's Otello, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, and Puccini's The Girl of the Golden West. Some more unusual performances have been with pop-artists Elton John, Harry Connick Jr., and the rock band KISS. The Orchestra is also involved in encouraging local composers, actively commissioning and premiering works by Australians. Oleg Caetani has been the Conductor and led the MSO on a European tour of such cities as Paris, Milan, and Berlin in The Orchestra has also toured internationally in the past, visiting countries like Japan, Canada, China, Russia, and the U.S.A. The MSO also has an excellent schools program as well, with concerts geared toward kids of all ages from pre-school to Grade 12. Open Rehearsals offer the chance for budding musicians to see and hear what it's like to be a professional musician. Concerts are also broadcast throughout the year live on ABC Classic FM radio. The Orchestra has also featured on ABC TV in two documentaries, To Russia with Love and MSO Century. The MSO performs on a rotating basis at several different venues, among them the Arts Centre, Hamer Hall, and Melbourne Town Hall.
