One of Melbourne's newer theaters is the Malthouse Theatre, located in the city's growing arts district. The Malthouse Theatre, which opened its doors in 1990, is actually a complex of three theaters, as well as rehearsal studios, and meeting rooms. The largest of the three theaters holds 520 seats. The Malthouse Theatre shares a common courtyard with the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, and collectively these two buildings are known as Ngargee. The theater is distinguished by its unique galvanized iron roofline, and it is heritage registered.
The Malthouse Theatre is the home of the acclaimed Playbox Theatre Company, a talented team of actors, writers, directors, designers, and others who produce contemporary theater productions. The theater regularly draws in such talented performers as Geoffrey Rush, Kevin Harrington, and other top names. After the performance, patrons are invited to discuss the performance over a glass of wine or other spirits at the on-site Cascade Green Bar. The bar is also open before the show and guests are encouraged to bring a drink with them into the show. Enjoy your next theater performance in Melbourne at the lovely Malthouse Theater.
