Treat yourself to a vivid theatrical performance in a historic venue at the La Mama Theatre in Carlton. The theater originally opened in 1967, but the building itself was built in 1883. Over the years, the building served as a printer, a boot factory, an engineering workshop, and a silk underwear factory before it was converted into the La Mama Theatre. The theater was designed after an off-Broadway theater in New York by the same number, with the goal in mind of providing great theatrical performances at a fraction of the price. The theater became a home for local actors wanting to work for the love of theater as well as writers and directors wanting to bring their local works to fruition. New works of composers, poets, and filmmakers found their home at La Mama, too. Over the years, La Mama's non-profit organization became a vibrant and acclaimed venue for experimental theater in Australia. From La Mama, a new style of distinctly Australian theater was born and countless film, theater, and other performing arts professionals got their start at this theater.
