The Forum Theater in Melbourne is located on the corner of Flinders and Russell Street in the city center. The theater was formerly known as the State Theater and was designed by an American architect called John Eberson, who was well known for his theater designs built all around the world.
When the theater was opened in 1929 it had the largest seating capacity of any venue in Australia at 3371 seats. The exterior of the theater is a Moorish revival style with ornate minarets and a clock tower. The interior of the theater is finished with Greco-Roman style statues scattered around the theater and a blue ceiling that represents the night sky with twinkling stars.
During the sixties the theater was converted into two cinemas run by cinema chain Greater Union. In 1978 the building was listed on the Historical Buildings Register. In the 1980s renovations took place and the venue was divided into two forums: one with a seating capacity of 540 and the second with a seating capacity of 2300.
Since that time the theater has been used for concerts and performances. and regularly perform there and have included such groups as Oasis, Dirty Three and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The Forum Theater is also used for the Melbourne Film Festival as well as being a popular venue for the Melbourne Comedy Festival which attracts comedians and comedy acts from around the world.
