When people think of culture in Australia they tend to think of the famous Opera House in Sydney. However, there are other Australian cities that certainly have their own cultural spots. If you are in Melbourne, it's doubtful you will find as elegant and diverse a theatre as the Capitol Theatre. Located very close to the Melbourne Town Hall, this venue looks a little different than you might expect. Instead of the traditional ornate façade so many music halls and theatres have, the Melbourne Capitol Theatre was built in the Chicagoesque style and was designed by the famous Walter Burley Griffin, who is responsible for a few of the other buildings in the area. One of the biggest claims to fame for the theatre in terms of architecture is the graceful and unique interior foyers. Those foyers are part of what landed the Capitol Theatre its place on the Victorian Heritage Register.
Enough about the building itself, what is really important in any theatre are the productions. Year round the staff of the Capitol Theatre work hard to ensure that there is a multitude of events for the general public to enjoy. Depending on the time of year you visit Melbourne it's also possible to take part in the Melbourne International Film Festival or the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Of course, if you miss these events, there are plenty of others to choose from during your stay. Contact the theatre directly or ask for help from your hotel staff. Either one is a good method for getting the tickets you want.
