Mazatlan, Mexico Weather Information

Mazatlan, located on the beautiful Mexican Pacific coast, attracts flocks of tourists each year. Thee beaches are an obvious attraction for many of these tourists; however, the pleasant weather, which is consistently warm year round, is also an important attraction for many tourists.

The climate in Mazatlan is similar to much of the rest of the Mexican Pacific coast.
Mazatlan does share some differences with other cities located on the Pacific Coast, such as Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco. Main differences include slightly lower temperatures at night and in the mornings. This is mainly due to the fact that Mazatlan is located some 1,000 miles north of Acapulco.

As Mazatlan is situated just south of the Tropic of Cancer, the area tends to experience what feels like perpetual summer. As a result the climate tends to be warm and pleasant during the winter with evening that are only slightly cool. January and February offer up the coolest months of the year; however, even then the temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s.

Summer in Mazatlan tends to be quite humid and hot. During this time of year the temperatures can soar above 90F, so it is a good idea to dress coolly and bring along plenty of sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses.

The rainy season begins in July and usually runs through October. During this time the region can experience fairly intense rains with August and September delivering the most rain. More than twenty inches of rain is typically received during these months while much of the rest of the year remains fairly dry. If you are planning to travel to Mazatlan during this time it is a good idea to follow the lead from the locals and cope with the hot humidity with an afternoon siesta. Most of the shops are closed during the afternoons and then reopen after the heat subsides in the late afternoon, so you will have plenty of opportunity for shopping.

During the wettest months of the year, it is wise to make sure you bring along either an umbrella or a plastic poncho in the event you get caught unawares in an afternoon rain shower. The rain is usually not cold at all, in fact, it is actually quite warm. In most cases, the rain shower last only a few hours at the most and afterward the humidity tends to drop, leaving the air fresh and clean. Most showers occur in the late afternoon or early morning, although sometimes the rain can last through the night.

If you are planning to take part in any of the many watersports that are popular around Mazatlan or swim during your trip, you will find that the water is quite balmy. During the winter the water tends to hover around 65F and can reach as high as 75F in the summer.

Throughout most of the year it is a good idea to bring along shorts and short sleeved shirts to help combat the heat. A sweater or light jacket is a good idea to ward off the chill in the evenings.
