It may be a special area of interest, but the general population is always pleasantly surprised to find out how many people enjoy the world of vintage clothing and vintage style. The Wild Wonderful King Vintage Museum in Oakhurst, California, is dedicated to just this fascinating specialty.
Located at 49269 Golden Oak Drive, #100, in Oakhurst, the Wild Wonderful King Vintage Museum is the result of many years of effort by the Allan King and his late wife Barbara. They held fashion shows as one method to raise funds for establishing the facility.
The Wild Wonderful Women organization is closely associated with this fascinating museum. This group helped established the facility in 2002, but the museum was moved in 2004 to be nearer the Children's Museum of the Sierra. Some of the feature exhibits have been, and are, vintage bridal fashion, "The Flapper Age" and the popular Victorian room. This display even includes a pair of 1790s slippers.
But there is much more, including a wonderful Civil War-era exhibit that includes actual discharge papers for some of the soldiers and military uniforms from the War Between The States. In addition, there is a wonderful children's display — shoes, clothing, dolls etc. At present, the King Vintage Museum contained more than 10,000 items in its vintage clothing collection.
The Wild Wonderful King Vintage Museum is open Wednesday through Friday 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. School and group tours are available by appointment. Admission donation is $2. Museum information — (559) 658-6999; Tours — (559) 760-7600.
