Mammoth Ski Museum
Mammoth Lakes, California is a town nestled among a circle of mountains in the east-central part of California. This small town is considered one of the best places to ski in the U.S. It makes sense that this town is the home of one of the best ski museums. The Mammoth Ski Museum looks much like a log cabin, but possesses one of the largest collections of art and literature related to skiing.
If there is a poster, sculpture, book, picture, or stamp about skiing, the Mammoth Ski Museum probably has a copy of it. The collection, which totals more than 10,000 pieces, was started by skier Mason Beekley and bequeath to Mammoth Lakes Foundation in 2001. The museum showcases several exhibits that reflect the history of skiing. These exhibits are located in the Pioneer Theater and Gallery. You can enjoy popcorn and other snacks and beverages while you review a ski show.
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area founder Dave McCoy is a significant contributor to the museum. McCoy, along with other well-know ski pioneers, communicates some of the most celebrated moments in ski history. You can purchase a copy of Dave McCoy's book titled, "Mammoth Dreams: The Story of Dave McCoy" from the gift store and have Dave McCoy autograph the book.
The Mammoth Ski Museum is open Thursday through Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. The museum is open longer on holidays. Adult admission to the museum is $5. Children between the ages of five and 18 pay $3. Members of the museum and college students (must show ID) are admitted to the museum free of charge.
