This gorgeous, historic lighthouse, located just 6 miles north of
Mackinac Bridge, calls to all lighthouse admirers. It was constructed in the late 19th century and molded into a conical shape. Being made of almost entirely brick has helped it to withstand the elements, and even Michigan's sometimes harsh winters. There is a small dwelling attached to it which features a dining room, parlor, kitchen, office, and four bedrooms, and overall this structure is more than 70 feet tall. Amazingly, the light is still active and acts as a guide for fisherman and other lake adventurers.
Prior to 1986, this landmark had been in sad shape. Since then, restoration has began, and it now appears close to its former glory. Every year after 1989, boy scouts and other volunteers come to the island to continue restoration. This lighthouse is open to the public upon appointment. However, you are always free to take a boat out to the island and take a look around, outside.
