This gorgeous, well preserved lighthouse is now a maritime museum and has been proposed as the location for a national lighthouse museum. It was founded in 1889 and was operational from 1890 until 1957; it is currently going under restoration, inside and out. This lighthouse contains the restored keeper's quarters and other hands-on exhibits throughout the building.
There is a giftshop on-site so you can always remember your trip to Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. The first floor is fully accessible to the public, and there are costumed guides that will take guests up to the lighthouse tower, itself. There is a small fee to gain entrance to this piece of history, but all proceeds, including giftshop proceeds, go towards the ongoing restoration of the fascinating building.
