Icebreaker Mackinaw Mariner Museum in the Mackinac Island Area, MI
This intriguing museum tells the history of the Mackinaw icebreaker, fondly known as "Mac" with displays and interesting exhibits. When "Mac" was decommissioned in 2006 the citizens of Mackinaw City were determined to bring their city symbol home. The ship is now docked and tours are offered through the large ship. There is also information pertaining to the building of this local legend. Before World War II ice on the Great Lakes wasn't much of a concern. Shipping simply stopped though the winter months. But with the coming of war the U.S. government realized what a danger this was to national security. They then sent out a commission for a ship that would break up the ice and free the Great Lakes. The commission was won by the Toledo Shipbuilding Company and they constructed "Mac". After 62 years of freeing the lakes from ice "Mac" has finally earned some rest. Fans can now view the insides of the ship which includes the Main Bridge, workout facilities, and the ship library.
