If you are visiting Michigan and have a day to fill then it is well worth your while taking a trip to Mackinac Island. Should you decide to visit the Island then you will have to take one of the three ferries that take people to and from the Island.
Mackina Island is fifteen thousand years old it rose above sea level when the glaciers receded. In 1817 the Island was registered as an historic landmark. The Island is located on Michigan's upper Peninsular on Lake Huron. No cars are allowed on the Island and so if you visit then you will find yourself either walking, cycling or riding on horseback - there are also horse drawn carriages on the Island. Most of the Island is owned by the park service and has many picnicking spots and hiking trails. The Island is also a very dog friendly place.
The ferries are owned by the Arnold Mackinac Island Ferries and they own a fleet of three triple decked Catamaran ferries. The trip across to the Island from the mainland takes twenty minutes. The ferries will also allow you to take a dog on board but the animal must be leashed. You must also be able to provide a license for your dog and a certificate showing that the animal is rabies free.
The Arnold Mackinac Island Ferry also offers sight seeing trips, charters and cruises.Passengers can either ride on the open decks or make themselves comfortable in one of the glass enclosed passenger lounges.
