Stone skipping may sound like childish business, but it's a big deal, and a fun-filled tradition, for Mackinac Island residents.
This tournament is open to all ages and always takes place at Windermere beach next to the Iroquois Hotel. Last year, over 900 people attended this annual event, and more than 160 people participated. Last years winner of the Amateur Tournament took home a 75lb trophy and a years supply of fudge. Last year, they also introduced a new event in the world of stone skipping, and that's Kerplunking. Kerplunking is exactly what it sounds like it is, throw a rock in the water to see who can get the biggest splash.
One of the contestants in this event is even now in The Guinness Book of World Records, and the event itself was once featured on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered". Join the festivities of all kinds, even the rock-throwing kind, during the fourth of July events on Mackinac Island. The skipping begins at 10 a.m., don't be late!
