Usually held in the first week of September, Labor Day weekend, this near 50-year tradition has become something of a phenomenon in the area, bringing in nearly 65,000 people every year to participate. This is the only day of the year that people are allowed to walk across the bridge. Door prizes are given, camera crews are out, and everyone is in the best of moods. The path beings at 7 a.m. and participants pay a minimal fee. There are so many people that start times continue until 11 a.m. The Governor's party heads off the walk, starting at the north end of the
Mackinac Bridge and ending in Mackinaw City towards the south end.
The excitement is palpable as walkers wait for the clock to turn direct and they are released for the five-mile trek. School buses are provided for the journey back to St. Ignace, at the starting point. And the great thing is that there is no fee to join in the event and bus rides require only a minimal fee per person. Camping is a great choice for lodging during this time, because busses will transport guests from the campground to the bridge and back. If you are in the area at this time, the Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk can make for an exciting adventure and a great way to enjoy the area festivities.
