Mackinac Island Weather and Packing Info

The Mackinac Island area experiences cold winters and comfortably warm summers. Since the heaviest tourism times are during the summer months, you can look forward to mild and comfortable temperatures during your vacation.

Spring - In March, the average temperatures range from the low twenties to the mid thirties, April sees temperatures in the low thirties to mid forties, and May temperatures range from the low forties to low sixties. At this time of year, you'll want to bring a warm jacket and warm sweater for the cooler climate.

Summer - Summer sees temperatures range from the mid fifties to the low seventies. Lake breezes make the weather comfortable. Bring short sleeves and sunscreen to help with the summertime sun.

Fall - September and October temperatures average in the fifties and sixties and drop to the thirties and forties come November. Pack that jacket, sweaters, and some long pants for the evenings.

Winter - The winter months are cold with average temperatures in the tens and twenties, at times dropping to below zero. Much of the Island is closed during the winter, and the ferry runs less frequently. If you are going to be on the Island in the winter months, you'll want to bring a coat, boots, and plenty of warm clothes.

Packing Advice

Regardless of what time of year you travel, good preparation and common sense is a good rule of thumb to follow.

  • Planning Your Packing. Anything you forget to pack, you'll have to buy. It is wise to make a list of everything you need to take with you and refer to it as you pack. This will ensure that nothing will be overlooked (and anything that is, is a good excuse to go shopping).
  • Preparing Clothes. Lay everything out before you pack. Fold, layer, and pack all like items together. Use undergarments and socks to fill space. Put toiletries and loose items in waterproof containers, in a kit or separate bag.
  • Packing For Family Members. With the exception of toddlers and infants, each family member should be able to carry at least one piece of luggage. A small backpack is ideal when traveling with young children.
  • Packing For Comfort. Products that will help you withstand the humidity, as well as, sunscreen, are a must. Natural fibers like cotton or silk and light colors are good choices for hot days. To avoid aching feet, pack a pair of familiar walking shoes. Make sure to pack jackets and sweaters for chilly nights.
