Shipwreck Coast Museum
Shipwreck Coast Museum
Surrounded by the Lake Superior shoreline, the Shipwreck Coast Museum is the only attraction of its kind, dedicated to the perils and heroism of maritime transport on the Great Lakes.

Even though Mackinac is a small island, there are lots of things to do and see. If you're only visiting for a short period of time, you'll want to be sure to make time to take the following tours and visit the following attractions to get the most out of your visit. You're sure to have a great time.

For Everyone...

Shipwreck Coast Museum - Paradise MI. This museum is owned and operated by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society. The museum is located at Whitefish Point Light Station on the shore of Lake Superior, just an hour north of the Mackinac Bridge. The museum displays exhibits and artifacts that portray the stories and events of the ships and sailors who met their demise in the waters of Lake Superior. The location of the Museum, Whitefish Point, is the critical turning point for ships that are entering or exiting Lake Superior. The museum is also home to the fully restored 1861 Lightkeepers Quarters that displays period furnishings and artifacts. This is a good place to spend a few hours of your time.

Great Turtle Tales. If you are looking for an interesting and unique way to explore the island and learn about its history, Great Turtle Tales has just what you are looking for. This 1 1/2 hour walking tour will take you on a stroll from Market Street to the East Bluff and you will explore some of the island's historic landmarks including Metivier Inn, churches, historic homes and hotels. The tour is guided by an educator/historian who can provide you with detailed knowledge of the area.

Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. One of the most charming aspects of Mackinac Island is that motor vehicles are not permitted on the island. This horse-drawn carriage will take you on a narrated tour of the island and its beauty and history. This 20-seat carriage is the best way to get to the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory.

Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory. Spend a few hours at the island's only conservatory. The conservatory is home to lush gardens and exotic butterflies from all over the world. See butterflies like the Emerald Swallowtail, the Zebra Longwing, the Luna Moth and the Indian Leaf free-flying in this breath-taking habitat. Full-time curators are available to answer questions, making this an educational experience in addition to an awe-inspiring scenic visit.

For the History Lover...

Fort Mackinac. Spend a day at Fort Mackinac. This National Historic Landmark used to serve as a sentinel in the Straights of Mackinac for 115 years. The fort was constructed by the British soldiers during the period of the American Revolution. Fort Mackinac is home to Kid's Quarters, a 1,258 square-foot interactive exhibit where kids can play checkers, dress up in period clothing and learn to play the fife and learn Morse code.

Colonial Michilimackinac. Located in Mackinaw City, you can see 18th century life recreated as you watch the detailed re-enactments and see soldiers demonstrate their skills. Spend the day strolling through the village and meet village residents.

Historic Downtown. Mackinac Island used to serve as a commercial depot for fur trappers and traders. Now it is home to five historic buildings that are open for tours. Spend the day touring the buildings include the Dr. Beaumot Museum/1820 American Fur Company Store, Biddle House, the Blacksmith Shop, McGulpin House and Mission Church.

Historic Mill Creek. Mill Creek used to provide sawn lumber for Mackinac Island in the late 1700s. Now this 625-acre state park is home to living demonstrations and a number of scenic trails for visitors to enjoy and is a great place to spend a few hours.

informed, interesting guides in a beautiful setting. if at all possible DON'T sit too close to the horses - a couple of rows back will let you hear the tourguide and avoid the horse flatulance.

A wonderful spot to visit, but it is not is Sault. Ste. Marie. The museum and Whitefish Point Lighthouse are 10 miles north of Paradise, on Whitefish Point Road. Walk the sand beach and visit the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory while enjoying this beautiful spot on Lake Superior
