The Toonerville Trail near Ludlow, Vermont is an abandoned railroad corridor. It is located along the Black River. Now, this location is one that has been transformed into a perfect place to bike and walk. The path has been paved over and is called the Toonerville Trail. It makes for the perfect walking experience through these beautiful landscaped locations. As you walk along the path, you will be following the same path of the Springfield Electric Railroad. The Springfield Electric Railroad has provided trolleys for many years. In fact, the Toonerville trolleys, as they were named were named after a popular cartoon strip from the area.
Currently, the trail is about three miles long. Walking it, you will come upon the business district here as well as residential areas. In addition, later, you can cross the Connecticut River to Charlestown, New Hampshire. The path also takes you through to the Meeting Waters YMCA Lewis Day Camp location, a popular spot during the summer months.
In 2000, the Toonerville Trail was named as a Community Millennium Trail, making it an officially historic landmark in the location. The city still maintains the trail so that visitors can enjoy this age old location. When you visit, stick to the trail. It is maintained and comfortable, but the brush and green areas are requested to be left undisturbed. Dogs brought with you must stay on the path and should be leashed. The trail can be used for walking, biking, cross country skiing in the winter as well as snowshoeing.
