The Harpoon Brewery in Windsor, Vermont opened in 2000 to complement the existing brewery in Boston. The brewery produced a selection of beers including the popular Harpoon IPA and UFO Hefeweizen. The company started in 1986 when the company founders wanted to replicate something similar to the local breweries they had discovered across Europe. Following the success of the Boston brewery the company purchased the Catamount Brewery on the banks of the Connecticut River in Vermont which currently brews Harpoon beer and Vermont Draft Soda.
There are guided tours of the brewery scheduled every Friday and Saturday at 3.00pm. The tours are free but numbers are limited to the first 30 people in the queue. The tour lasts 45 minutes and includes a guided walk through the brewery, where visitors can learn about the brewing process, and a tasting of beer samples. Participants must be over 21 — don't forget your ID card. At other times of day visitor can visit the Production Viewing Area which gives a great view across the brewhouse and see production in action, there are also complimentary tastings in the sample area.
There is a bar and seating area overlooking the bottling line and also a beer garden. Here you can get a pint of your favorite beer, or try one of the five 6oz sample trays. A choice of sandwiches and wraps are available with suggested beer pairings. The brewery organizes two events every year — The Harpoon Championships of New England Barbecue with over 40 teams competing, and the Octoberfest with Harpoons Octoberfest beer, food and music.
