Experiencing the atmosphere of Vermont, paying homage to America's past, can be fun and educational. But it can taste good too! A trip to the Green Mountain Sugar House in Ludlow is a must for many who make Vermont a vacation destination. This local treasure is quite popular with residents of the Green Mountain State as well.
The sugar house, with its distinctive red roof, is the scene of the "crime" where maple syrup and delicious maple fudge are created. This wonderful destination was built in 1967 by the Harlow's, David and Marjorie. While the technology and methods have changed somewhat, new owners Doug and Ann Rose continue to produce some of the tastiest items that can be made using local maple sap.
Trees are still tapped, sap is collected, boiled and turned into finished products offered to eager customers. These delights include maple cream, candy and maple nut brittle, sold along with Vermont crafts and gift items in the shop. Tours are available in the spring of each year.
Located on Route 100, the Green Mountain Sugar House is near the well-known Vermont lakes region. This area is home to numerous popular travel destinations, including the Normal Rockwell Museum and the Calvin Coolidge boyhood home. Many travelers make a stop at the sugar house on the way to or from some of these famous sites. Customers find the best maple syrup around, along with old-fashioned candies, gifts and crafts.
