Many people who experience the beauty of outdoor New England for the first time find they are hooked, and return again and again. Recreation and camping areas such as Camp Plymouth State Park are among the reasons for the repeat "customers."
Located on Scout Camp Road on the shores of Echo Lake near Ludlow, Vermont, Camp Plymouth State Park offers excellent outdoor activity, camping and cottage accommodations. Open from Memorial Day to mid-October to cover the summer season in these northern climes, Camp Plymouth State Park offers picnic shelters, hiking, swimming, boat rental and of course, camping. Group camping and horse camping can also be accommodated.
The group camping area (south side of Buffalo Brook) has tent sites and pit toilets. This general area also offers a large picnic area, beach, horseshoe pits, concession facilities and boat rentals. Cottages are available by the day or by the week. These cottages are fully furnished, making them ideal for those who wish to experience the outdoors but also desire indoor sleeping arrangements. (Some early season rates may apply - Be sure to ask.)
Buffalo Brook was at one time known as "Gold Brook," giving the area and the park added historical significance and interest. Gold was found here in the mid-1850s, with panning and mining activity continuing until well after the Civil War. The park property covers 295 acres and contains hiking trails, fishing and hunting.
For those who want to see some of the other area attractions there are art galleries, a cheese factory in Plymouth, the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Homestead, Okemo Mountain Resort and recreation area and much, much more. Park Phone: 802-228-2025 (summer). Reservations: (888) 409-7579.
