At the Black River Academy Museum, you'll be able to see a school that received famous students like former President Calvin Coolidge. The Black River Academy was built in 1835 and for 103 years, it provided a fine education to students 26 states and 3 foreign countries. Besides Calvin Coolidge, some of the school's most famous students were John Garibaldi Sargent (U.S. Attorney General), Paul Harris (founder of Rotary International), Ida Fuller (the first person to receive Social Security), and Abby Hemenway (author of
The Vermont Gazetteer).
Inside the museum, visitors will find artifacts and restorations of Black River Valley culture. Exhibits at the museum include an early American house, Main Street Ludlow circa 1900, Calvin Coolidge's School Days, and a one-room schoolhouse. Besides the three floors of exhibits, the museum also offers workshops in traditional crafts and small theatre productions.
