Louisville Science Center began life in 1871, as a 'cabinet of curiosities' with a very limited collection. Today it is the largest science center in the state with over 150 exhibits, interactive activities, an IMAX Theatre, and innovative educational programs. Over half a million visits enjoy the Center every year.
The Science Center is organized around three themes. 'The World We Create' features activity stations and demonstrations in the 'Chemistry Kitchen' where the world of chemistry, engineering and telecommunications can be explored. 'The World Within Us' focuses on health and biological sciences and includes The Bodywatch Gallery which takes visitors on a journey through the body, and the Time Machine - see what you'll look like in 20 years! 'The World Around Us' houses three ecological galleries on the Atmosphere, Aquasphere and Terrasphere - exploring our impact on the world. The Discovery Gallery features some of the Museum's old favorites include the Egyptian mummy, one of its original exhibits, and the polar bears.
The Kid's Zone has been designed for children under the age of seven. They can explore different activity areas such as 'Take Off' and 'Let's Build'. 'Explore' provides a crawling areas for infants and pre-walkers and Splash is the popular water area. At the IMAX Theatre you can experience all the sights and sounds of the big screen — be part of the Tour de France race or the devastating Hurricane Katrina.
The Center offers many learning opportunities for all ages including the KinderScience Mornings, Science Saturdays, Chemistry Day and Family Science Nights where school staff, students and their parents can enjoy an evening of science.
