Almost all tourists that come to Kentucky wind up going to see the Belle of Louisville / Spirit of Jefferson in Louisville, KY. The Belle of Louisville has been around for over 90 years and is a National Historic Landmark as well as a treasured symbol of Louisville. She is situated in the same location that she was when she used to carry passengers up and down the Ohio River in the 1900s. This boat was built by James Rees & Sons Company to be used by the West Memphis Packet Company in 1914. Her first name was Idlewild, a name that lasted for many years, but was the first of many names.
The Belle was used during the war to provide shelter for troups as well as transporting people back and forth from one city to the next. Eventually, this all took its toll on the ship and she was ready to be demolished when she was bought at an auction for $34,000 by Marlow Cook. This was the start of a new life for the Belle as she was totally restored and had her name changed to the Bell of Louisville.
The Spirit of Jefferson has only been around for 36 years, but has a history similar to the Belle. The one similarity now is that they are both operated by the Louisville Metro Government.
The Belle of Louisville and Spirit of Jefferson are used for some very prestigious affairs such as the Great Steamboat Race, The Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks and Thunder Over Louisville. Many people also use the Belle of Louisville and Spirit of Louisiana for the special occasions in their life like weddings, proms or a gift for a loved one. They are used as private charters or for group tours.
They both offer some very enticing specials for New Years Eve. There is an open bar, delicious meal available and a DJ for your listening pleasure. This holiday special cruises last only two hours but are a great way to get ready to bring in the New Year.
