Artemisia is a popular restaurant in Louisville's art gallery district that offers fine contemporary cuisine in creative and atmospheric surroundings. The restaurant is known for its rotating art exhibitions and live jazz music, and has been consistently voted one of Louisville's top 25 restaurants.
The restaurant building dates from the 1850s and was originally a spice shop and bakery. Over a hundred years later it was renovated to create an art gallery, and by the late 1990s a cafe had been added. Covered in attractive creeper, with large wooden doors, a wrought-iron courtyard and bistro tables outside has created an attractive environment for lunch or dinner. The gallery features contemporary art — landscape, abstract and still life paintings and ceramics. Live music is provided by local jazz musicians who perform at Artemisia Thursday through Saturday nights.
The food is stylish and contemporary and the restaurant serves lunch and dinner. The lunch menu includes salads and appetizers such as the field green and duck confit salad, or soup du jour. Choose from entrees such as caramelized sea scallops or the roast free-range chicken. The sandwich selection includes the open-faced pastrami and black bean burger. Dinner appetizer option include lightly fried calamari and fois gras 'pan perdu', and to follow - the pan roasted salmon, Cajun smoked rabbit or pork osso bucco.
There is a sumptuous dessert menu, fine wine selection and a full martini list to complement your meal. Happy Hour is between 5.30pm — 7.30pm when half price cocktails and appetizers for $6 are served in the bar.
