There is no more famous movie town in the world then Hollywood, California and, the most famous movie theater in Hollywood is, arguably, the Egyptian Theater. In 1922, the Egyptian Theater was the site of the first ever Hollywood premiere, Robin Hood.
The architecture and design of the Egyptian Theater became a popular model for other movie theaters being built around the country during the 1920s. The exterior of the theater, including the courtyard, are in Egyptian style. The inside is decorated with Egyptian style paintings and hieroglyphs.
During the 1990s the Egyptian Theater was restored by American Cinematheque. As in its heyday, the theater once again functions as a movie theater. State of the art technology combined with the rich history of this theater make it a movie watching destination. Different film series are offered regularly for patrons.
Additionally, historic tours of this theater are available. You can choose to do a tour by itself or combine your tour with a movie. The tour will show you the magic of the theater during the 1920s and the exceptional modern day movie equipment used at the Egyptian Theater. Your tour will include visits to the dressing rooms and singer boxes that were used during the days of the Grauman stage shows. It will also include a visit to the state of the art projection booth and information about how 21st century technology was seamlessly combined with the history and elegance of the 1920s Egyptian Theater.
