The history of the automobile and more than 150 rare and classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles are on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum, one of the most unique museums of its kind. Instead of typical displays, the Museum has created elaborate lifelike dioramas of early Los Angeles into which period vehicles are placed.
Called the Streetscape Tour, the series of settings gives visitors a fun and unusual peek into the past and takes them through such recreated scenes as a 1911 American Underslung stuck in the mud in Malibu, an alley with a 1932 Twin Coach Helms Bakery truck, a 1930s new car showroom, and a 1920s service station. The second floor features a rotating exhibit of race cars, classic cars, movie cars, and vintage motorcycles, while the third floor houses a Children's Discovery Center with hands-on exhibits. Visitors can also dress up in hats, goggles, and scarves for a fun photo-op in a 1910 Model T Ford.
