Olvera Street in Los Angeles, California was first a very small street called Wine Street. This changed in 1877 as the street was enlarged and the name was placed in honor of Agustin Olvera, how owned a residence on the end of the street. He also served as the first judge in the county. A stroll down the street will allow you to see many of the historic buildings that have stood for many years. Avila Adobe is one of those buildings which was built in 1818 by Francisco Avila who was a mayor of the city. Visitors can see the oldest brick house in the city, the Pelanconi House which dates back to 1855. Another house, the Sepulveda House was built in 1887. This building served as a residential building and an Eastlake Victorian business.
Olvera Street is often described as the birthplace of the city of Los Angeles. It is a small village that has some 27 historic buildings located within.
