Erected in 1923 as a billboard to advertise a new housing development, the original "Hollywoodland" sign was meant to be a temporary structure. Constructed of metal squares rigged together by a complex frame of wires and scaffolding, each letter was thirty feet wide and fifty feet tall and had to be dragged up Mount Lee on dirt paths. Over eight decades later the sign still stands and has become a symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry.
Left to deteriorate for many years, the sign was finally rescued in 1949 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce who removed the last four letters and repaired the rest, eventually unveiling the shiny new version that is now protected by the Hollywood Sign Trust. Visible for miles around, the Hollywood Sign is probably one of the most photographed sights in Hollywood. Well protected by gates and cameras, the sign is not accessible to visitors and must be admired from afar.
