The best place to see the stars in Los Angeles is at the Griffith Park Observatory which has offered free access to high-powered telescopes since 1935. Situated over a thousand feet above sea level, the copper domes of the Observatory's terraces house Zeiss and solar telescopes which draw hundreds of people every night of the year. The Observatory also houses the Samuel Oschin Planetarium which thrills visitors with its full-immersion astronomical environment and awe-inspiring shows.
Educational events are regularly held at the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon, a multi-media theater that hosts demonstrations, lectures, films, and even live transmissions from space. Popular exhibits include the Foucault Pendulum and a whimsical 150-foot timeline of the universe composed of celestial-themed jewelry. Extra stargazing is provided once a month by the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and Sidewalk Astronomers, who hold their Star Party on the Observatory grounds and set up free-standing telescopes for the public.
