The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is the "mother church" of the Archdiocese whose 287 parish churches serve over four million Catholics. With seating for three thousand parishioners, the Cathedral offers daily masses as well as special masses celebrated by the Archbishop. The new Cathedral, which replaces the historic 1786 building, is a contemporary architectural wonder. Geometrically complex, the 11-story Cathedral contains no right angles and features furnishings that reflect the cultural diversity of the city and create a beautiful and serene place to worship.
Entering at the Shepherd's Gate, visitors can take the Grand Staircase to the upper plaza and gardens which offer a full view of the Cathedral. Many events are on offer, including exhibits in the Arts Chapel, organ recitals, family activities, and Shakespeare plays in the plaza. The Plaza Cafe opens onto a tree-shaded patio and is a wonderful place to enjoy a bite to eat and a moment of peace.
