The Avalon Hollywood Theater has one of the most varied histories in Hollywood and more name changes than any other theatre. Born the Hollywood Playhouse in 1927, the venue began its long career as a lavish legitimate theatre presenting contemporary drama. The ensuing years with their new inventions brought a succession of different entertainments to the stage, from the radio programs of Fanny Brice and Lucille Ball to televised burlesque and variety shows to club nights and rock concerts.
During its evolution, the theatre has been known as the El Capitan Theatre, the Jerry Lewis Theatre, the Hollywood Palace, and the Palace. Everyone has performed here, from Judy Garland to Madonna, Frank Sinatra to Nirvana, and The Beatles to Snoop Dogg. Now called the Avalon Hollywood Theatre, the space is a dual night club and concert venue, featuring a rotating club schedule of hip-hop, R&B, and top 40 music, and concerts of contemporary artists of all musical genres.
