Music lovers of every stripe must make time for a browse through Amoeba Music, one of the few independently owned music stores that survived the clutches of the huge chains and that still offers a personal touch and vibrant atmosphere. Amoeba is serious about their music and stocks every style imaginable, from top forty to hip-hop, jazz, soul, electronica, experimental, international, and underground rock. They've also got a big selection of movies and vinyl LPs to dig through.
The store is a trading post of new and used discs, so visitors looking for hard-to-find titles will most likely find what they want here. As much into community as music, the socially conscious company donates some of their profits to the Rainforest Action Network and raises money for Gulf Coast Relief. Frequent in-store events include DJs, charity events, release parties, and the We're Live free concert series which has featured some big names like Elvis Costello.
