Public Star Parties at Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles, CA

The Griffith Park Observatory, a public planetarium and astronomical observation point in Los Angeles, holds "Public Star Parties" every month where anyone can come and learn about the sun, moon, planets, stars, and other heavenly bodies in our sky. These parties take place from 2 PM to 9:45 PM and are sponsored by the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. Knowledgeable amateur astronomers from the Astronomical Society are on hand at the parties to educate the public about how to use telescopes and about what they are seeing when they look skyward. At some monthly parties, amateur astronomy clubs from various Southern California cities attend as well.

Visitors to these parties often bring picnic lunches and dinners, blankets, lawn chairs, and frisbees so they can enjoy the park as well as the stars. Children and families are completely welcome. The Griffith Observatory is located on the southern side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park and provides a hilltop vantage point that is ideal for observing both the sky and the city of Los Angeles below. It is 1,134 feet above sea level. These stargazing parties are completely free and open to the public.
