ArroyoFest
2003 marked the first time in 63 years that there was silence in the Arroyo Seco's canyon. The Pasadena Freeway was empty, and not because of any sort of accident or natural disaster. Arroyofest was created as a way for people to show their support for cleaner air, stronger neighborhoods, more parks and recreation areas, better transportation, and a greater appreciation of the history of the area. The event kicked off in the early part of the day with bicyclers taking to the freeway. Later in the day people were allowed to walk down the historic portion of freeway, without a single car on the road. The area was filled with water and food, as well as over 70 exhibitors from Arroyo and the surrounding areas. The event also raised awareness for the area, including affordable housing and creating bike and walking paths along the freeway. Local schools display projects related to the Arroyo region, including banners lining the fences along the freeway. Also included in Arroyofest is teh "Spirit of Arroyo" puppet, which walks down the parkway. Local school bands performed at the event, and a special art installation was located under the pedestrian bridge, so that all returning to the starting point after the even could see it. Prior to the actual festival was the Gran Limpieza of the Arroyo Seco, getting people together to help clean the parks. The event helps bring awareness of the Arroyo Seco region to the public, as well as change for the future of the area.
