Beverly Hills: More Than Television Drama

The land that came to be known as Beverly Hills was fertile for many centuries, held dear by Native Americans who regarded it as a holy site. Even before it was officially discovered in 1769, the Beverly Hills region was filled with plains, foothills, deep canyons and lush sycamore trees. The California territory was admitted as an American State in the year 1850 and it wasn't until the early 1900's when the contemporary era of Beverly Hills began to be designed. The first designs of Beverly Hills saw many winding roads and streets filled with trees. The community was actually designated to be a place where buyers could custom-build their own modest-sized rural homes. In the year 1919 celebrities Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford bought land on Summit Drive. Other renowned names followed, including Will Rogers. By the time that stars like John Barrymore, Robert Montgomery and Harold Lloyd began building their homes in the area; Beverly Hills was already becoming famous for its large mansions built by today's top movie stars.

Beverly Hills is a city located in the western part of Los Angeles County, California. Despite the fact that it is an official city, Beverly Hills seems to have been absorbed by the larger Los Angeles area, as a distinctive part of LA culture. What is the contemporary Beverly Hills community really like?  For one thing, the city is not as wholly wealthy as it is often portrayed on television or movies. Obviously, there are some very affluent homes in Beverly Hills, yet these homes make up about 10% of city residential areas. Other homes in the area are made up of smaller rental units, detached homes, and many less than 3,000 square feet. The city's average household income is average for the state, just over $71,000 dollars a year. What is true is that Beverly Hills continues to be a lucrative market for real estate in America--in fact the most expensive market with a median price range for homes soaring into the 2.21 million dollar range.

Another distinguishing characteristic of the city is its connections to show business. While Beverly Hills is not exactly swarming with young celebrity residents, it remains true that there are a high number of Hollywood workers in the area, some of which are active in social civics, including actors, directors, writers and producers. Hollywood has been very kind to Beverly Hills giving the city starring roles in such TV series as Beverly hills 90210, the Beverly Hillbillies, and for motion pictures, the Beverly Hills Cop movies.

Beverly Hills was once a distinct city of its own merit, but has become engulfed by the city of Los Angeles in recent years. Yet few residents or tourists can deny that the city continues to offer its own unique charms, even while continuing to be associated with wealth, stardom and moviemaking. Beverly Hills has become a part of contemporary American culture and is often used as a nickname for any affluent and fashionable territory. If you are planning for a Los Angeles vacation or are planning to move closer to the greater Los Angeles Area then give the 90210 city a try!
