When many of us think of deserts, we think of dry desolate and brown terrain. That is, until you've gone to Great Basin National Park in Baker, Nevada. Here you will find land that is very much alive and full of color. Great Basin was discovered in Europe more than 150 years ago. The Great Basin National Park is known for its remote location, which gives an outstanding visibility of the sky at night. It's been found in 2005 to be one of the darkest places in the world. One of the high points at the park is the new Great Basin Visitor Center, which has numerous exhibits and collections of the many natural resources in the park.
Lehman Caves in Great Basin National Park near Las Vegas, NV is yet another of the great tourist attractions at Great Basin. Lehman Cave, which is made of limestone, is one of the more beautiful caves with the many decorations including flowstone, helictities, stalagmites, popcorn, stactities and hundreds more different formations. Lehman can only be viewed with a guided tour. The tour guides are very qualified park rangers that do more than just guide the tours. They explain all about the geology of the caves as well as its great history. Needing a tour shouldn't be a problem, however, as the tours are offered daily, all year long. The only time they're not open is on the major holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Tours of the cave last either 60 or 90 minutes. You'll see a few more rooms in the 90-minute tour, with the Grand Palace being one of those rooms. Tickets can be purchased up to 30 days in advance.
