Fire and Ice Competition near Las Vegas, NV
The annual Fire and Ice Show, held over two days every January in Cave Lake State Park, Nevada, is a well-known ice sculpting and fireworks competition. Cave Lake State Park is located close to Ely, Nevada, a small city that serves as host to the annual event. The festivities kick off the evening before the festival starts with a fireworks show in Ely. Since Ely's main claim to fame is their historic railroad museum, the fireworks are set off from a preserved antique railroad train as it moves through town. The day after this unique fireworks show, visitors head to Cave Lake to watch ice sculptors from all over the region carve masterpieces in an attempt to win money and prizes.
The festival has food, live music, and activities for kids for visitors to enjoy as they watch various artists' ice sculpture works emerge over the two days of the festival. At the end of the second day, the sculptures are judged and an awards ceremony is held. The evening culminates with another spectacular fireworks display. Though Ely and Cave Lake are remote - the nearest cities, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and Reno are all over 250 miles away - the Cave Lake area can be a great stop for those who enjoy wintertime mature activities such as hiking, winter camping, and ice fishing.
