However, Vikingsholm Castle brings old world right here in the States. The castle is a ninth century reproduction of a Norse fortress. Getting to the castle is done by hiking a one mile trial or by boat. The castle is built on 200 acres of land in Emerald Bay.
The castle was the idea of Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight, who bought the land in 1928. She wanted a structure built that would bring the design of a Viking stone castle. It was built in a horseshoe shape with an enclosed courtyard. The castle is two stories with a three story tower and a pyramidal roof on the tower. A circular tower with a conical roof is opposite the main castle building. Construction on the castle began in August 1928.
Guided tours of the castle are offered daily Monday through Sunday. There is a charge for admission for visitors over the age of 6. A visit to Vikingsholm Castle will take about an hour, but if you wish to explore the grounds further then you may want to take a bit longer. Vikingsholm Castle is a lovely departure from the average tourism attractions. There are no modern computerized gadgets or wild rides here, but the adventure is more old world and much more educational than anything else you could find.
