The Tallac Historic Site is located in South Lake Tahoe, California along the southern shores of Lake Tahoe.
The Tallac Historic Site is located in South Lake Tahoe, California along the southern shores of Lake Tahoe. Some have said it has changed little since it was originally built in the 1800s. The site is located on Highway 89 just three miles north of South Lake Tahoe. The Tallac Historic Site is the place where some of California's earliest rich and famous people built their fancy summer homes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The site is located near beaches and secluded woods. This historical site is on a 74-acre piece of land and is home to three large summer estate owned by rich people from San Francisco. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Before rich San Franciscans turned the area into their personal private summer retreat, the Tallac Historic Site was a place where pioneers came to search for gold. This was around the 1860s. When the transcontinental railroad was finished, the area turned from a gold mine to a popular retreat for the vacationing rich. The area turned into the Tallac Resort and had two major hotels, a casino, and several out-buildings. There were saloons, boat rides, and a cutting-edge (for its time) dance floor that was mounted on springs. It wasn't long before people began building summer estates so they could enjoy all these facilities while still having a private location to retire once the fun was finished. Visitor to the Tallac Historic Site can enjoy guided tours of the Pope, Baldwin and Valhalla Estates. Art exhibits in these estates are changed often. The Valhalla Estates is possibly the grandest with wooden floors and a 20-foot high stone fireplace. Concerts on Tuesday and Thursday nights are played at the Valhalla Estates. It is also home to the Cultural Arts Gift Store.
