The University of Tennessee's main campus, located in Knoxville, is a diverse, energetic school that provides not only quality education to its students but also exciting events, creativity, and intellectual outlets to the community. The University of Tennessee (UT) was established in 1794 as Blount College, founded by William Blount, who made significant contributions to Tennessee's achieving statehood. Since its small beginnings, it has grown to one of the most recognized public research universities in the nation. The campus spans 550 acres and has 220 buildings and has a student population of over 20,000 undergraduates and 6,000 graduates.
UT's sports teams, named the Volunteers or "Vols," are very popular in the area. The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame was created because of the success and popularity of UT's women's basketball team and renowned UT coach Pat Summitt. Some notable alumni of the university who further help the recognition of this school include Nobel Prize winner James Buchanan, actor John Cullum, Dupont CEO Chad Holliday, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, and novelist Cormac McCarthy.
